What to Expect at Your One Year Old’s Cake Smash

There’s no birthday quite as celebrated as your child’s first. And, the new-ish tradition, to photograph a cake smash, is a super fun way to celebrate this day. As a parent, you’ll probably know these little darlings are anything but predictable. You just never know what you’ll get when you put a baby, some decorations and cake in front of a lady with a camera. So, here’s a little bit about what to expect at your child’s cake smash.

1. Expect Them to Not Like Cake (or icing)

You’d think every one year old would be ecstatic to taste their first sampling of sugar but sadly, some aren’t. The good news is that although they might not love it, you get photos of them not loving it! And, they can be pretty funny anyway. It’s them and who they are, someone who might not like cake (or at least not like getting their hands dirty) and that’s okay. We often get many great photos before the cake is even introduced. Here are some photos of kids who didn’t love their cake but looked great anyway.

2. Expect the Unexpected

If you’ve ever heard the saying, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink, it applies nicely to the kiddos at cake smashes. You can lead a kid to cake but you can’t make them eat;)  Some kids are more interested in running away from the cake than eating it. But, I am patient and will continue to guide them back, giving them samples and showing them that yes indeed, the cake is good. This little guy was a runner (or technically a crawler) but we convinced him to play long enough to get some really fun photos before he tipped the cake on its head.  Given his lack of love for cake we thought we’d share it with his sister. Turned out,  he did not like sharing either.

3. Expect to Get Dirty

Yes, let’s face it, most kids love sugar and introducing it to them can be really fun for both of you. To enhance the chances of you both enjoying this moment here are a few tips.  First, make sure the cake and icing aren’t cold. It’s harder to break apart and eat.  Second, break open the cake to let the child try the cake, not just the icing. Some kids like cake more than icing. Third, be prepared with cleaning equipment! I always have towels and wet wipes on hand but it’s also a good idea, as the parent, to make sure you’re wearing clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. You never know when your messy child will launch themselves into your arms after devouring a cake. Below are kids who didn’t need much convincing to enjoy their cakes and sometimes got a little dirty in the process.

2019 at Perfect Moments Photography

This is what 2019 looked like for Perfect Moments Photography. Below are the 168 sessions – 117 outdoor and 51 studio – for our biggest year yet!  It was my desire to grow this business after a conversion I had with my husband in late 2018. Our kids are getting more and more independent and my husband has arranged his life to have additional time at home. This has given me extra time to focus on my passion and career.  Since 2016 I’ve transitioned from wedding photography to family & newborn photography.  This frees up some time to be with my family on weekends while still having plenty of time to photograph clients.  I believe this is what they call work/life balance and although it can still be challenging (as all small business owners know) we are doing it the best we can.

I want to say a huge thank-you to all the clients who put their trust in me to capture their memories.  Those who know me know I don’t take this lightly. I am often checking out locations, checking and rechecking weather, pondering poses,  thinking of options and rearranging my schedule to make sessions come together as best they can. I care deeply that I am producing work people can cherish and memories that bring them joy. So, thank-you!!  Thanks for coming back again and again. Thanks for referring your friends. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and am very excited about what 2020 will bring.

Fall Family Photo Session Season

For many photographers (myself included!) the fall family photo season is the busiest of the year. But, I never get tired of it! Families like the one below keep this job exciting. We enjoyed a sunny afternoon at Campbell Valley park and the kids brought a ton of energy. Yes, I have to work out to keep up with my little clients! They kept me running all through the session but that makes it even more fun.

Sunset Maternity Photos

This session started off at the usual pace, the usual at least for two little children and a dog, that is. You’ll see a trend start as the photos progress. It turns out I had two little runners on my hands and boy were they fast!  Shockingly fast for little people. Especially the little girl. I have to admit since I run myself, it was awesome. I don’t mind chasing. And, I love making the parents run, too:)

Westcoast Family Magazine

This is the second year that I’ve partnered with WestCoast Families to create a cover photo for their summer issue. They choose one amazing family to spend a little time in a cool location and capture some adventurous photos. This family sure didn’t disappoint. They were so full of life and energy and the kids stole my heart with their sweetness and fantastic attitudes. It was a great time.  For some extra fun, my videographer/web-designer joined me to document a little behind the scenes video that you can see here.

Bonds of Love

You can see so clearly the bonds of love this mother shares with her son.  She is his whole world, his best friend and playmate, his comfort and safety.  Together, I’m sure they’ll make it through any challenge that comes their way.  That is a pretty special thing to have and cherish-those special bonds of love.

Ever heard of IGTV? Neither had I until…

Okay, I’ll be honest. I might not be as in the know as I used to be. I might be slipping on my social media jargon. But, you’re never to old to learn, right?! Here I am learning something new and it’s pretty fun, I have to say. I’ve just uploaded my first Instagram TV video. Yup, you’d be right, this is IGTV. Not sure where this will go but I’m having fun. My channel will have lots of behind the scenes clips, business and photography tips and perhaps a few personal things as well. The photos below are the result of the behind the scenes video just posted. Have a look here and stay tuned for the next time.

Down In The Woods Today

When I went down to the woods today, I found a big surprise.  This darling girl was having a picnic.  A picnic with a birthday cake!  Beneath the trees, where nobody sees, she played hide and seek as long as she pleased.  Cause that’s the way, this darling girl had her picnic.  Thankfully, there were no bears, teddy or otherwise, down in the woods today.

Wiggles and Giggles

Sometimes the wiggles and giggles hit.  It can be a challenge to keep kids in a pose but I know there will be smiles.  So when the giggles set in, I could tell these photos would be great.  See for yourself.  His laughter was infectious and he kept smiling.  This little guy is going to keep his family laughing for years to come.  I know he kept me smiling the whole time.

Outdoor Family Photography

Outdoor family photography is one of my favorites!  No more posed, stiff and serious photos.  Natural is in.  So, have fun, laugh and enjoy your time.  Let your personalities shine.  When you are able to let go and just be, I’m able to photograph you at your best.  And together, we’ll be able to capture those memories to share with others.  And we’ll have a good time while doing it!
