Photographing “Older Newborn” Babies

Ever heard of an “older newborn”? Don’t worry if you haven’t, it’s not a common phrase. In fact, I probably invented it!  An “older newborn” is a baby more than 2 weeks old. As a photographer, I have been trained to get these tiny humans into the studio as soon as possible after birth. The younger they are the sleepier they are.  Younger babies are easier to mold into adorable poses for photos. Unfortunately, many new mommas didn’t realize this important fact. They didn’t realize this has been a prerequisite for newborn photographers for years.  So, in the last while, I’ve changed my views a lot on this issue. I had so many new moms contact me in dismay.  They didn’t realize they had to book so early and didn’t know they had to come so soon!  They just desperately wanted a few photos of their little ones!

In response to that desperation, I began to say yes to these moms.  It made me sad they wouldn’t have beautiful moments of their tiny baby’s life professionally documented. And when I began to say yes, a strange thing happened. I loved the photos we captured! Most importantly, the moms and dads loved the photos too!  Soon I couldn’t tell the difference between some 6 day old sessions and some 4 week old sessions.  I no longer fret about capturing these “older newborns” completely naked and/or molded into angelic poses.  Even so, I’ve been able to capture their adorable smallness and even their smiles and wide eyes. So, the doors are now open to “older newborns”. They are more than welcome. Just be prepared to spend a few hours at the studio. But, don’t worry, it’s pretty comfortable. Just ask these babies below!
